Varsity students share love with the community

During the valentine’s week, Zetech University was filled with pomp and color as the institution launched a campaign dubbed “Its Z love” during the Valentine’s season, focused on sharing love with students, staff and the community. Led by the Corporate Affairs department, the institution engaged staff and students in a three-day drive to collect donations with the aim of equipping the Ruiru rehabilitation center; a home to over 50 children in Ruiru. The campaign also included special treats and sessions as a show of appreciation to the fraternity.

The love campaign included a special lunch for students with the Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene and Dean, School of Business Prof. Peter Kibas on Valentine’s Day where they talked about their experiences, challenges and what they love most about the University. Students and staff were also given flowers and sweets throughout the day and took lots of photos to mark the event.

Thereafter, the staff team enjoyed a session of love, treats and interaction as they appreciated each other for the great work they do and shared cake together. During this session, staff also listened to Eric Wanjala, manager at the Ruiru Rehabilitation Center, the identified home where all donations raised would be delivered. He shared the current challenges in managing rehabilitation centres and the need for all players in the community to come together and care of the less privileged in society.

After a successful awareness and collection drive that saw the fraternity donate clothes, shoes, toiletries, food stuffs, stationery, storybooks, cash, biscuits and treats, a team was set up to visit the home and spend a day of fun and feasting with the family. The team cooked, cleaned, played games and held inspiring sessions with the kids and afterwards, handed over contributions to the delighted kids and their care givers. The University also handed over a cash donation to cover therapy sessions for one of the kids who is battling a traumatic spinal injury.

Commenting on the campaign, VC Prof. Munene lauded his team and students for being a blessing to the community. “As a University, we believe in combining our knowledge and community experience to address social disadvantage and exclusion, with the aim of impacting society. We are grateful to our students and faculty for ensuring this campaign was a success.” He further noted that it is our responsibility to take care of these children and ensure that they live a normal, and happy life.

On his part, Mr. Wanjala extended appreciation on behalf of the home, saying, “I would like to thank the Zetech University family for sharing the love and the continued support extended to us for years. We truly appreciate it,” he said.
