A hot spot for excellence in Journalism and Media Training
In modern society, media is crucial in the daily life of the Government, private sector and citizens. Media acts as one of the pillars of economic growth in a Nation through the use of available tools for entertainment, education, training and as well as empowerment. In addition, society relies on media to communicate and access news from all over the world.
At Zetech, through the establishment of the vibrant Department of Media Arts and Design, we are keen on training future communication experts and journalists who will be a force to reckon with in the world.
This department that is close to 20 years old was created to impart to learners competent skills, tactics and relevant knowledge to prepare them for the dynamic media landscape, in the areas of PR, print media, electronic media, and advertising. Individuals who graduate from these courses are equipped to challenge society through media platforms and use content gathered to tell compelling stories.
The Head of Department Roy Khaemba, who has been with the University for over 10 years, is proud to have tomorrow’s journalists, producers, presenters, advertisers, public relations practitioners and writers at the Institution, having mentored a seasoned faculty to shape the students for the industry. Under the custody of the result-oriented academician, he uses his management skills and experience to nurture a team of professionals for a better future.
In his testimonial, he said, “The department has state of the art media equipment, fully equipped television and radio studios to enable students to learn multi-camera production and experience modern day presenting techniques, as per the industry requirements. Additionally, we have a hub to nurture creative skills in Public Relations, Print Media and Advertising to ensure students become an all-rounded professional.”
In the field
The strides made by the University are highlighted through notable alumni currently creating names for themselves in the media world. Hussein Mohammed, a crime journalist with KTN who recently won the Journalist of the Year award courtesy of the Media Council of Kenya, is a product of the University, having been among the pioneers who started the Journalism club. His counterpart Robinson Ikenye is a celebrated sports journalist and host with the same station having completed his training at Zetech.
Comedian Mtumishi (Gilbert Baraza) is a presenter with Mulembe Fm while Raphael Ambasau is working with international media house AFP; these are just a few of the alumni who are excelling in various media stations.
The department has continually invested in resources, especially for the radio and television studios, to allow students to grasp the technical skills required. The radio station was launched a few years ago and has been undergoing trials and monitoring for some time has challenged students to produce creative and informative shows.
In mid-June this year, media trainee and photographer Rinkei Teketi launched his radio programme dubbed Gospel Drive that runs from 7.30-10:00 pm. The mastermind behind this is taking a course in communication, majoring in PR. The importance of worshiping God, upholding societal values and passing accurate information are the principals behind the programme.
The department also has a TV station that is used for the purposes of learning, training the journalism students on various skills relating to broadcasting, film production and photography. They enjoy the Zetech experience through interaction with lecturers and regular academic tours to leading TV stations.
Highlight his experience, Journalism student Dennis Gikera student says, “I am passionate about media; the art of news anchoring and investigative journalism excites me a lot. I look up to Jeff Koinange and Nyali MP and formative investigative journalist Mohammed Ali.” He said. Jane Nyambura in her sentiment shared that she decided to do a course in media because she was passionate and wishes to excel to greater heights after finishing her course.
