Zetech rides on online platform to ensure uninterrupted learning

In response to COVID-19 that has posed a new set of challenges to higher institutions of learning, Zetech University has employed initiatives to reduce the impact of the pandemic and survive the reality of the virus, through investment in virtual learning modules.

The University resolved to offer continuous training through an engaging blended learning programme which mirrors face to face learning and is accessible to students through smartphone, laptops, tabs and desktop computers.

The move has resulted in a myriad of benefits for the Zetech fraternity including discounted fees, access to free 10GB data bundles provided by the institution, zero transport costs and enhanced interaction between students and faculty. Additionally, continued interaction is facilitated through streamlined zoom meetings to guide students on blended learning and how to take advantage of the new mode of learning.

Vice Chancellor Prof Njenga Munene noted that embracing technology to advance education is the way to go. “It was critical for us to quickly shift to online learning once the quarantine was effected to ensure students enjoy uninterrupted learning. We are proud of the strides we have made that includes execution of assessment tests and exams online to ensure students can graduate on time.” said Prof Munene. He further lauded Safaricom and KENET for partnering with the University to provide data bundles to all students to facilitate online learning.

Furthermore, the University used the period to challenge students to use research skills and IT training to develop innovations that can address global issues. According to the DVC- Academics, Research, Extension and Student Affairs Dr. Alice Njuguna, several students have taken up the charge and used the period to develop innovations around overcoming the impact of COVID-19.

“We are proud of ICT students including Fabrice Mugabe who has developed Mobricare, an App inspired by COVID-19 that alerts people on imminent tragedy as well as Mograschool, an online learning platform targeting primary and secondary education; we also have Chris Achinga who came up with a COVID-19 dashboard to show statistics of the affected. Indeed, such progress signifies the positive impact of online learning for our students.” said Dr. Njuguna.

As the University prepares for a July intake that will absorb over 1900 students placed by KUCCPS to the institution on government-sponsorship, the online learning trend is set to be a hit among those seeking to pursue quality higher education in the country.
