Hey everyone, I've been prescribed Accutane for severe acne. I'm a bit nervous since I heard it has some serious side effects. Has anyone here taken it? Any advice or experiences to share?

Hi CuriousCat923, thanks for reaching out! It's important to understand the benefits and risks associated with Accutane. This medication can be highly effective in treating severe acne but does come with some side effects that need monitoring.
Firstly, have you had a chance to discuss these potential side effects with your doctor? They are usually well-equipped to guide you through what to expect and how to manage any issues that might arise.

Thanks for the quick reply, DocOnCall! Yes, I did talk with my dermatologist about it. He mentioned some common side effects like dry skin and lips, but he didn’t go into too much detail beyond that.

Great to hear you’ve had a conversation with your dermatologist. Accutane can indeed cause significant dryness, including the skin, lips, and eyes. It’s crucial to manage this by using moisturizers and lip balms regularly.
Other side effects include potential issues with mood swings, depression, and in rare cases, more severe conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or liver problems. Given these risks, it's important that you have regular check-ups with your dermatologist while on the medication.
Also, Accutane is not recommended for pregnant women due to a high risk of birth defects. Are you currently on any form of contraception?

Thanks again, DocOnCall! I am on birth control and plan to continue using it while taking Accutane. My dermatologist also mentioned that I should avoid excessive sun exposure since the medication can make your skin more sensitive.

That's right, CuriousCat923. Protecting your skin from UV rays is very important while on Accutane. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and try to limit sun exposure as much as possible.
It’s also beneficial to keep track of any new or worsening symptoms and report them to your dermatologist right away. This way, you can make sure any side effects are managed effectively.
If you have more questions or need further support while on Accutane, feel free to reach out here or consult with your healthcare provider directly.
