As Zetech University celebrated its 8th graduation ceremony, the institution marked a significant milestone by choosing a timely and impactful them — “Harnessing green skills and creativity for shared prosperity.” The theme, which coincides with the opening of COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, underscored the importance of sustainable development and the role of young leaders in addressing global climate challenges.

COP 29, short for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is a global summit that brings together world leaders, scientists, and climate activists to discuss and find solutions for the ongoing climate crisis. This year’s conference is hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, focusing on collective global action to mitigate climate change and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

During the graduation ceremony, Zetech University Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene emphasised the need for the next generation of graduates to actively engage in climate action initiatives. “As we witness the problems of the world, it is crucial that we recognise the responsibility each of us has in mitigating the effects of climate change. At Zetech University, we are committed to equipping our graduates with the knowledge and skills to be agents of positive change in our world,” Prof. Munene said.

The global climate summit, taking place in Baku, has brought together world leaders, policymakers, and activists to discuss urgent solutions for the climate crisis. Prof. Munene noted that the university’s theme was a reflection of Zetech University’s commitment to global sustainability efforts, with an emphasis on environmental stewardship and creating solutions that benefit both people and the planet.

Absa bank CEO, Mr. Abdi Mohammed, who was the chief guest at the graduation while giving his speech remarked, “as a bank, we recognise that addressing climate change requires every sector to rethink its approach to business and investment. From renewable energy to eco-friendly projects, Absa has been at the forefront of green financing in Kenya. Our investments are increasingly focused on supporting businesses that prioritise environmental stewardship and demonstrate a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint.”

“The future of our planet lies in the hands of youth who are committed to climate action. We must lead by example and take bold steps towards reducing our carbon footprint,” The Zetech University overall best student, Martin Njue noted while addressing the congregation. Zetech University’s ongoing efforts to incorporate sustainability into its curriculum, research, and campus operations have been highlighted as a key part of the institution’s long-term vision. The university is developing specialised courses in bachelor of science in nursing, bachelor of science in medical laboratory science and bachelor of education Science to adequately prepare graduates for careers in green industries.

John Mwai, the university’s Director for Corporate Affairs and Marketing, stated that Zetech University is actively involved in various climate-related initiatives, including tree planting campaigns and waste reduction programs, as part of its sustainability agenda. “As a university, we want our graduates to understand the urgency of climate action and the roles they can play in solving environmental challenges,” Mwai explained.

With the COP 29 summit drawing attention to climate action at a global scale, Zetech University’s focus on educating and inspiring future leaders to tackle climate change is more relevant than ever. The ceremony ended on a hopeful note, with graduates pledging to use their education to drive meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
