The School of ICT, Media and Engineering recently hosted an insightful open lecture on “Building a Career in the Media Industry and Beyond”, delivered by Dr. Taneli Heikka, a former Head of Political News at a national media company in Finland.
Drawing from his extensive global experience in the evolving media landscape, Dr. Heikka challenged media students to take a proactive approach in shaping their careers. He emphasised the importance of defining one’s personal brand, urging learners to identify their strengths and clearly articulate their unique value proposition. According to him, understanding what sets you apart is the foundation of long-term success in the industry.
Equally critical, he noted, is the power of networks. In today’s competitive job market, building meaningful professional relationships can open doors to opportunities that formal education alone may not provide. As he aptly stated, while education may secure a first internship or freelance role, a career is largely sustained by “networking with people.”
Dr. Heikka also highlighted the reality of a rapidly transforming media industry, where long-term employment in a single organisation is becoming less common. To thrive, students must develop adaptable skills and cultivate networks that enable them to navigate diverse roles and professional contexts.
Addressing the question many aspiring media professionals ask: “How do I make a living?”, he encouraged students to embrace creativity and entrepreneurship. This includes pitching story ideas, building independent platforms, and diversifying income streams through sponsored content, subscriptions, events, advertising, consulting, and influencer partnerships.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Heikka reminded students to seize opportunities as they arise, build their own authentic voice, and continuously nurture their curiosity, a trait he described as essential for growth in the media space.
The session left students inspired and better equipped to navigate the dynamic and ever-changing world of media careers.
