On April 23, 2024, Zetech University hosted a high-level stakeholder workshop in collaboration with the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to advance discussions on the Certified Demand-Side Energy Management Programme. The event, held at the Zetech University, Technology Park Mang’u Campus, brought together energy sector stakeholders, electrical engineering faculty, and students at the Zetech Business Technical Institute to explore the significance and implementation of the new certification programme.

The initiative marks a significant milestone as Zetech University prepares to roll out the Certified Demand-Side Energy Management Programme, aimed at equipping professionals with the knowledge and skills required to become Energy Managers. This programme is particularly crucial for improving the country's energy utilisation index, enhancing energy audit practices, and supporting the implementation of energy efficiency projects.

While officially opening the workshop, Zetech University Vice Chancellor Prof. Njenga Munene emphasized the global energy access crisis, citing data from the International Energy Agency (IEA). “About 800 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, and 2.4 billion rely on carbon-emitting sources,” he said. “It is imperative that we pioneer sustainable, affordable, and clean energy solutions in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7. The introduction of this programme is just one step in realising that goal.”

EPRA’s Energy Efficiency Officer, Eng. Eustus Njeru, elaborated on the regulatory framework underpinning the programme. He noted that the certification will align with the Energy Management Regulations of 2012 and 2025, developed under the Energy Act, 2019. The primary goals include reducing energy consumption per unit, promoting the trade of energy savings credits, and facilitating energy trading schemes.

The workshop underscored the shared commitment of academia, government, and industry to foster a more sustainable energy future for Kenya and beyond.
