According to the United Nations Environment report, the world generates over 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste annually, with only 55% being managed in controlled facilities. If left unchecked, global waste is projected to rise by 70% by 2050. This alarming reality continues to threaten progress towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

In response to this global call for action, Zetech University joined the world in marking World Cleanup Day 2025, under the theme “Strive for Five.” The campaign seeks to mobilise at least five percent of the world’s population to actively take part in cleaning and preserving the environment.

The clean-up exercise, held at Ruai Market, brought together hundreds of volunteers from Kiambu and Nairobi Counties, alongside community groups, corporate organisations, and civil society. Zetech University, through the Zetech University Knowledge Ambassadors (ZUKA) club actively participated in the clean-up activity, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The University recognises that education goes beyond academics, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal  4 (Quality Education) by nurturing values of responsibility, community service, and innovation to address pressing societal challenges.

This exercise was a call to action for sustainable living — reducing waste at the source, promoting recycling, and building environmentally conscious communities. As the world continues to grapple with climate change and unsustainable consumption patterns, Zetech University remains committed to empowering its community to be agents of change.
